Calling all physics educators in the Greater LA Area! Join the STEP UP movement.

STEP UP is a national community of physics teachers, researchers, and professional societies. We design high school physics lessons to empower teachers, create cultural change, and inspire young women to pursue physics in college.

Goal: STEP UP Advocates are teachers of physics implementing STEP UP curriculum in their classrooms to inspire young women to pursue physics. Selected teachers will join a cohort of nearly 200 teachers from three specific regions centered around Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City. 

The 2024-25 cohort will join a growing, regional community of teachers, university faculty, and pre-service teachers to increase the strength of the physics education community in the local area. These teachers will be on the front lines of shifting gender equity in physics and will provide critical feedback to STEP UP about the lessons and the impact in their classrooms.

Happy (almost) break. LA Physics Teachers!

We hope that you were able to administer the students pre-survey and deliver the Careers in Physics lesson with your physics classes.  If you want a refresher on the Careers in Physics or Women in Physics lessons OR if you know anyone that is interested in the STEP UP lessons after talking with you, please attend and/or promote our free, virtual Monthly Workshops.

As we transition into the holiday season, we just wanted to send out a few reminders:

• Start thinking about recruiting physics teacher friends and colleagues for Cohort 2. Applications will open in Feb 2024.

• Second semester is a great time for the Women in Physics lesson. Begin planning when you want to teach it. There will be a workshop for it on Tues, Dec 5, 2023, at 7:00 - 8:00 pm ET, for reviewing the material - Register here.

• Post any implementation tips and/or questions on the discussion board

• The last pre-survey that needs to be filled out for participation in the program will come out the week of Dec 4.

• Our next Physics Teacher Meetup is Saturday, December 2, 2023 from 8:45am - noon at USC. See the flyer here for details.
